Tent Pole and Event Movies are mega-budget films. Tent-pole movies are usually $100 Million + in terms of budget. Tent Pole movies have a huge marketing and promotional budget and have associated merchandise, including video games. Tent pole movies have become increasingly important to the major film production companies as they are seen as a good way to 'securitize' money spent on a film. In other words, tentpole films tend to be popular with audiences, which leads to good box office and DVD, Blu-Ray sales and downloads. They also attract 'tie-ins' with fast food chains like McDonalds and other brands that want to be associated with the film franchise.
