Tent Pole and Event Movies

Tent Pole and Event Movies are mega-budget films. Tent-pole movies are usually $100 Million + in terms of budget. Tent Pole movies have a huge marketing and promotional budget and have associated merchandise, including video games. Tent pole movies have become increasingly important to the major film production companies as they are seen as a good way to 'securitize' money spent on a film. In other words, tentpole films tend to be popular with audiences, which leads to good box office and DVD, Blu-Ray sales and downloads. They also attract 'tie-ins' with fast food chains like McDonalds and other brands that want to be associated with the film franchise.

Go to the web site http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/records/budgets.php

Produce
Look at the record-breaking budgets for the movies listed. How many of the movies on the list would you describe as 'tentpole' or 'event'movies. Create a Tentpole movies Mood-Board (a mood-board is a visual prepresentation of a research topic - similar to a visual collage), that illustrates some of the tentpole movies of the past few years and a few that are forthcoming.

Tentpole research project
Choose one tentpole film that was released in 2012. Find out how much the film made at the Box Office. Find out the tie-ins and merchandising for the film. Find out how many hits the trailers attracted on You Tube. Find other examples of ways in which the film would generate money for the Film Production Company.

Based on your research and the Resource Pack below present a written response of 300 words to the following statement:

"Tentpole and Event movies are a good way to securitize investment". To what extent do you agree with this statement?
